Message from the President

Happy New Year!

I hope this finds everyone doing well and that you all had a wonderful Holiday season!

Our club’s current photo exhibit at City Hall is coming to a close, but the city did extend the show until January 29, 2020. You will need to pick up your entries on the 29th (which is a Wednesday) from 1 - 5 pm. If you cannot pick them up during that time please let me know and we will arrange to have them picked up and then returned to you. The city’s contact person is Sydney Adam, email: sadam@santa-clarita.com, I do not have a phone number for Sydney, but the pick-up time is already set for the above time and date.

Our next meeting is Tuesday, January 14, 2020. Dan Holmes is our guest speaker, he will be presenting “Composing in the Landscape World”. We are posting his flyer on our website so you can view it or you can checkout his website at http://danholmesphoto.com for more information on the presentation.

Dusty has sent me an updated list of upcoming club events that should afford some awesome photo possibilities. Here is a short list of upcoming trips:

San Fernando Mission - 1/18/2020
Golden Dragon Parade in Chinatown - 2/1/2020
Death Valley Field Trip - 2/21 - 23/2020
Valley of Fire Field Trip - 3/13 - 15/2020
Los Angeles County Air Show, Fox Field, Lancaster - 3/20 - 23/2020

That is a list for the next three months, we’ll have more and a updated list on the website soon! Remember to please sign up for a club event on the website so we have an idea of who is planning on attending. We will have to make reservations for the Death Valley and Valley of Fire field trips so those two are very important to sign up for. They will also be great trips, many photo possibilities and always a good time.

In closing, I’d like to say thank you for all of your well-wishes for my Granddaughter Ivorie! She is doing well! We received a great report last month, the chemo and radiation are doing their job and the cancer is disappearing. Of the two cancer spots on her lung, one is completely gone and the other has split in half and is very small. The doctors feel confident that it will be completely gone come March when her current round of treatment is scheduled to be complete. In the meantime, I will continue to drive Ivorie and her mom to the Valley Childrens Hospital in Madera every other week for treatment.

I am looking forward to seeing each of you next week. If you have any photos you’d like to share, please send them to me (via email, 4000 pixels on the longest side by 200 dpi) by Friday January 10, 2020 so I can include them in the slide presentation.

Keep shooting!

                          Kevin

Details and Announcements

January Meeting: Dan Holmes - Composing in the Landscape World

Concept – Create Powerful Landscape and Nature Photographs

Objective:  Learn to use compositional elements to create strong and powerful photographs.
- Understand how compositional elements work.
- Learn major compositional elements.
- Learn to identify compositional elements in photos and artworks.
- Learn to look for and find compositional elements in nature/life/studio.
- Incorporate Compositional elements into your photographs.

How: Spend time learning how to “SEE” through the viewfinder
- how to Simplify
- how to look for the story in the image
- how to pull something memorable out of all that scenery

What makes a powerful Landscape Photograph?  What gives a photograph “staying power”? How does it become a “lifetime image”?  How do we find the image in all that beautiful nature?  How do we see and create emotional photographs using just what we see?

We will talk about Getting to the Point, building a composition, “Looking through the Scenery” Turning off and relaxing, and the simple joys of being outside and discovering!
We will also spend time on a fun discussion/critique of photographs submitted from the group.

The examples will be mainly landscape and nature – but the thoughts and ideas apply across all genres and styles of photography: people, sports, abstracts, animals, family….  It is all about telling Stories with Light!

Image Share - Members only

Please ensure to email any images you want to share at the monthly meeting to Kevin by 5pm the Friday before the meeting.
kkarzin@aol.com

Please note that in order to save as much time as possible for our guest speakers, no images will be shown in July, August and November. There will be a "Year in Review" slideshow during the Holiday Party so send in any images you want included.

(It'd be great if you included your name and image title in the file name, but not required.)
